About Exercise 3-1: Basic Table Join

Purpose: the purpose of this exercise will be for you to gain knowledge on how to perform a basic table join using desktop GIS software.

Learning Objectives: after completing the exercise, you will know:

  • how to work with data in a comma separate values (.csv) format;
  • how to perform a table join between a shapefile and a .csv file.

Deliverables: if you are completing this exercise for a class assignment, you can submit a screenshot of your response to the instruction questions.

Overview: You will join a shapefile of land use polygons with a comma separate values (.csv) file of land use descriptions. By joining these two datasets, you will be able to utilize values from both datasets to make meaningful maps like the example shown in Figure 3.12. of the book.
